Plastic mold steels are tool steels used in the shaping of plastic materials. They differ from other tool steels in that they have high corrosion resistance, polishability, and pattern-taking capability. They contain alloying elements such as chromium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, vanadium, and aluminum.

They are typically used in techniques such as injection, extrusion, blowing, and pressing of plastics. Generally, the carbon content and the quantity of other alloying elements are lower in these steels compared to other tool steels. Depending on the type of plastic raw material used, mold steels can be subjected to various effects, so the appropriate plastic mold steel should be selected according to the plastic material being shaped. Plastic mold steels are usually used in a pre-hardened state. The primary reason for this is to prevent dimensional changes that might occur after heat treatment. Pre-hardened steels can be used without further heat treatment after processing.
